Pontiac is a suburb of Detroit located in Oakland county. The city serves as the county seat. It is the third city to be founded by European settlers in Michigan after Detroit and Dearborn. The city features a mix of historic homes, new constructions, municipal buildings, and a tight downtown area. The famous and well travelled Woodward Avenue ends in Pontiac.
Pontiac is of course named for the famous war chief of the Odawa people, Chief Pontiac. While the level of his involvement in the war baring his name, Pontiac's War, is debated, Chief Pontiac no doubt influenced the indigenous uprising movement that unfolded after his siege of Fort Detroit. Although the siege was unsuccessful, Pontiac's actions inspired local indigenous leaders to rise up against then British occupation. Unfortunately Pontiac was persuaded into complacency by British war secretaries and, after increasing ostracism from native tribes, was subsequently assassinated by a Peoria warrior.
